Clive Sutton clive.maf@googlemail.com
Hi Tony,
Great job as usual.
Could you update the site a couple of new details please?
1) My email has changed to clive.maf@googlemail.com
2) Attached is a pic of me (left) at 50 and Paul Smith (right) soon to be 50. As spotty teenagers Paul and I
used to cycle to and from school regularly, from Woodlands - through Ilanda and Malindela down the Hillside Rd to Gifford.
Helen and I drove up to see him and his wife Carrie from my house in Kenilworth to his house in Bourne near Spalding
in the UK recently.
Happy days . . .
best regards,
Clive.
PS: suggestion - how about a search facility, i guess people would mostly want to search for surnames.
Also - are there any links/a Gifford page at e.g. friends reunited or other such sites?

David Archer davidatsea@btinternet.com
Hi there
Could you please add me as a new addition?
David Archer. I started in 1A1 in 1974 & finally leaving in 1977 to go to SA.
I am currently living & working in the UK.
Never really got on at the school, just grinned & bared it. I have fond memories of Bulawayo but not many of the school –
maybe because I wasn’t a keen sportsman. Always got on well with the technical staff in the engineering, tin bashing & wood butchery departments.
My contact e-mail is davidatsea@btinternet.com
Best wishes & thanks for the website.

Tony Beardwell beardwel@iafrica.com
Hi Tony,
My name is Tony Beardwell and I attended Gifford from 1960 to 1965.
I was a border at Newman House. Please add me to your contact list. I live in La Lucia in Durban South Africa,
and for many years have been trying to find a copy of our 1965 school magazine, initially to show to my daughter
and now hopefully one day my grandchildren.
It was interesting to visit the school in 2001 in the hope of securing a copy, but to my surprise, the office staff
did not know what I was looking for, and they appeared to be using the same typewriters our staff used in 1965!!!!
You can imagine my delight when I stumbled across your web sight and looked up some of the photo's from 1965.
It certainly brings back the good times having read the comments from Laurence Wright posted on the 31/03/08.
Although I don't remember him personally, the mention of Fuzz Hotz, Mnr Souter, Ian MacIntosh and the like
got the memories flowing back. Mr Mc Laughlan was our Head of Newman House and he and I ran the Golf Clinic
at Bulawayo Golf Club for those interested pupils.
With kind regards,
Tony Beardwell

Barry Swynnerton bjvr4@hotmail.com
Hi Tony
My name is Barry van Rensburg (I was Barry Swynnerton). I was adopted by my stepfather in the late 70's
so hence the difference in name (I would more than likley be remembered as Barry Swynnerton.)
I was a student at Gifford 1979 and 1980 and stayed in Russell House for those two years.
The story about my finding this site is rather unique (for me anyway). I own a Spur in Mauritius
(a year now) and a customer came in for lunch today and we got chatting. To cut a long story short it
turned out that he was a student at Gifford in about 1978 or so and he told me about G.O.B....
I am, to say the least thrilled..... I went into the site immediately and found this wonderful
"past"..... WOW - I happened to go into a few pictures and so on of the school (mmmmm...... very sad
about what has happened at that school).
By the way do you know if Mr Menne still at the school.... we used to call him Jack Menne - he was our
hostel master in those days.... gave me a few jacks in my time.... ha! ha!
Anyway Tony, I would love to become involved in GOB and open to helping or getting involved
in any way possible. Please contact me and let me know what I should do to get involved or how
I can assist in any way.
Look forward to hearing from you soon.
Regards
Barry van Rensburg - ne' Swynnerton

Best Regards,

From Web master:
You the same Brian Davidson who was a prefect when I was with Dino Androuliakos and Martin Meinie?
Also played cricket for Tasmania?
From Brian:
No that was Brian Davison. I knew him quite well. But I'm the better looking one with nearly the same name.
I was there from 1960 - 1964. Was a prefect in 1964 with "Wappy' Watson, Brian Logan, Peter Lishman,
Rory Sudding, Gavin Connelly etc. all in the same class.
I played rugby with Dino & Martin but they were a year behind me I think.

I came across you Gifford High School address and list of names. noticed the name Mike Gertsen on the list.
I have been looking for Mike for over 13 years now. We were once best friends and we both lived in Bulawayo

Do you have an updated email adress for Mike?
His email on your list does not appear to be current. Can you help in anyway?
I really need to make contact with him. Can you help?
He moved back to Norway around about 1991 and I moved to America around 1992.
We kept in touch up until his wedding, he sent me photographs and then he and his wife moved and we lost contact.

Hi Tony, The name rings a bell but I cannot put a face to it yet,
I have an idea, but we are all getting old these days.
I migrated to Newcastle, Australia May 1980 and haven’t regretted it,
have been back to Zim/SA 1991, 2002 & 2004 for holidays and to catch up on Relatives.
Things certainly have change with time especially Zim. You have done a tremendous job with the Web Page
and is always interesting to see where everyone is these days.
I see that you are in Perth and if you see Steve Coakley please tell him I said Hi,
Steve and I were in the Army together 9th Batt. Last I heard from Steve he was passing through Sydney
and gave me a call.
I checked out the Gifford Graduation site and managed to see the school and grounds with
a comment that it was now in ruins can do you know if this is true or not.

Is that darn Marula tree still standing, had many a bruise whilst lined up as target practise for
the seniors behind Newman House.

Graeme Campbell graeme54@telkomsa.net
I attended Gifford from 1966 through to 1970, ending up what was then know Form 6M.
Left Zimbabwe in 1978 and started a career in the South African Army.
With the amalgamation of the SADF with the liberation armies was offered and accepted early retirement.
Took up a post as a journalist for a community newspaper in what is now my home town Bronkhorstspruit.
In my second career I rose through the ranks and am now the Editor.
Have met one Gifford boy since leaving Zimbabwe, Alistair Croll (spelling very dodgy).
Alistair was several years behind me but has a successful career with the Anglo-American Group or De Beers.
The two are separate these days but still have links.
Was a Newman House border for my last year and feature in the one pic together with Cliff Bromfield and Kim Brackenbury
et al.
“Served” under Jannie Neser, Carl Coetzee and their ilk. Headmasters were Chalky White and Mr McChlachlan (spelling??)
Buddies were Steven Allen, Wade McCullum and Michael Botha. Got on well with the late Ken Broster, Mr Pate the Woodwork
master and had great respect for Messrs “Fuzzy” Hotz and LaFrench?? (metalwork).
Played rugby but never bloomed, Paul Semple was the rugby great at that time and water polo coached by John Finlayson.
Married to the same girl for 25 years and have two grown up children.

Kerry Hughes hughesk@hcma.com.au
Hi Tony,
I was thinking about some of my old friends from the Gifford days and then did a search by the school's name.
Thank you for the excellent site.
What details do you need from me in order to place me in the role call?
I started Gifford in 1970 and left 1975. Made prefect in '75.
I tried to contact Shawn Fitz Gerald but his e-mail bounced so I am not sure if he is still with DPG.
I also tried to contact Brian Tobias but his mail server returned the mail. Not sure where he is now
There are several people active on the site that may have known my brother.
I'd like to put his name on the "deceased" list as he passed away about 12 years ago.
His name was Bryn Hughes and I think he started at Gifford in 1974, 4 years after me.
I'll get the exact date of his passing and let you have it for the website.
Regards
KERRY HUGHES

Will Berry billberry@freenet.de
Hi Tony
Talking about guys who were in my class........
At the beginning of 1974 when I went into my second year of high shool
we welcomed a skinny blonde haired guy called John Kennerly into 2a2.
He had come from 1a1 and his Dad was a Bulawayo Cop.
(A Superintendent, which was altogether not too shabby as far
as Police rank goes...) anyway John went through all the neccessary bits
of our "outstanding" education along side his class mates at least until "O"s at the end of 1977.
I think he went into printing..... at the Chronical Newspaper in Bullies...
What knocked me flat was that in 1979, all across the front pages of the Herald,
the Chronical, RBC and RTV was that John had been abducted by "gooks"somewhere between
West Nicholson and Beitbridge. While hitch-hiking to South Africa he had caught a lift
on a tanker that was stopped, burnt-out and the driver let loose to pass on messages about what had happened.
Held hostage and schlepped at gun point, over more than 300 kilometers on foot by the "gooks",
who were all the time probably not too happy about being persued by Rhodesians forces,
he was marched cross country, through areas controlled by JOC Operation Repulse,
into Mocambique and eventually held in Mugabe's prison camps. We were told via the news that
he was moved sporadically from place to place, along with
four or five ESCOM and Forrestry Commision abductees nicked in the Eastern highlands.
Just before the cease fire the Rhodesian Security Forces managed to find where they were
being held and freed the abductees.
Where is John? Why did we never hear about his experience?
What about the ESCOM and Forrestry commission guys? Where are these men?
Straight up! John ..... I would like to hear your story!
Regards
Will Berry

Mark Sasman mark@ecosense.co.za
Hi there Tony – new e-mail = mark@ecosense.co.za
Just got 2 ties from Tom O’Conner – Eishhhh – brought back memories – think he may
have a few left. Tom is currently off line ie.has no working e-mail. Contact me for
his phone number.
Saw the pic of Reggie at the reunion in JHB – Immediate remembrance of bending
for six with Hugh Fry (deceased) – I think it was for smoking on the bus during a careers
outing to the air force base ! From what I remember Hugh had strapped on a padded
contraption to lesson the sting but got caught and had to go back for a second round
the next day – It’s a vague memory – anyone remember such??
Must take my zincJ - Also Van Heerden who was a masochist with a cane but I
regret not one of those corrections!
The web site is really a great trip down memory lane and evokes many a
picture although some are in mist except for Boobs Sue Cole - who can
forget!
I’ll toast the memory with a good glass of red later.
Have a great day - well done again
Cheers
Mark Sasman

Hi Tony
Trust you are well. I recall communicating with you some 5 years back now about Gifford.
I was there from 1981 to 1983 and wanted to ask if you could trace a French teacher at the same
time - an English lady with the unusual surname of Tod with first initial D.
I am busy preparing a joint venture company and one of the staff has the surname Tod.
I cannot for the life of me recall the teachers first name but apparently if this girl knows the name,
it might be the start of a new family tree...
Any help would be appreciated and also if you could
you update my Email address to this one

Hi Tony
It's Graeme Renaud here. I am a Gifford old boy, (1978-83).
I was in Bulawayo around the end of May this year and paid a visit to our old school.
I have attached a number of photos which I took on the visit,
which I am hoping you could upload to the 'Photographs' section of the website.
I have minimised the file size so as not to take up too much space on your server.
The general condition of things is pretty shocking as you can see from the photos.
I did not get to see any staff as I did not spend a lot of time in Bulawayo, (was en route to Vic Falls),
and was at the school late in the afternoon. Most boys I saw were not wearing any kind of uniform and many
of the ones on the playing fields only had their shorts on! How things have changed.

With reference published list of ex/past school members I should like to add mine.
Only difference being is that I attended the fore-runner of Gifford namely

People may remember my father of that period - Fire Chief Tom Clifton.

Laurence Wright L.Wright@ru.ac.za
Hello Tony
My name is Laurence Wright. I was at Gifford from 1963-1968. I was a
dayski, in Faraday House. It has been a pleasure browsing through the
site, which brings back good memories - some of them a bit faded. I was
sorry to hear of the passing of Ken Broster. He was a great guy. I was
also pleased to see the citation for Charles Cowan. The main field was
named in memory of him. I was a buddy of his son, Bill, and the three of
us used to go Black Eagle counting in the Matopos. Bill is working in
energy research at UCT.
I have been director of the Institute for the Study of English in Africa
at Rhodes University in Grahamstown since 1990. I went to Rhodes as a
student, thanks in part to advice from Ken Broster. There I caught the
academic bug in a big way, and went to Warwick University in the UK as a
Commonwealth Scholar and later to Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar to do a
doctorate.
Some of my memories are of the famous production of HMS Pinafore put on
by Harry Knowles in my first year (1963) at the Hall on the Fife Street
site (the Technical College, wasn't it?). A lot of us (whose voices
hadn't broken) were dragooned by Harry into wearing stiff petticoats,
and he roped in members of the Municipal Orchestra to accompany the
production. I think Tjaart Steenkamp was Sir Joseph Porter KCB. Ron Pate
played the French Horn in the orchestra and also built the set (which
was very good).
There was also a good production of Twelve Angry Men.
Anyone remember the radio-controlled model hovercraft, which kept
crashing into things, and then the full-size one powered by a bike
engine which, to the best of my memory, never got off the ground?
The teachers I remember were Edgar Lafrentz (I was lousy at
'metalwork'), Mr Ness ( I was equally lousy at woodwork) and Mr Hotz (a
terrifying guy with a heart of gold), Mr Souter (Afrikaans), Jack
Sandham (technical drawing) and Brian Webb ('Tammy', who taught me in
Form I Faraday); Mrs Clelland (English?) and Mev Delport (Afrikaans).
And Ian Macintosh and "Finny". The heads while I was there were Don
White and Ian McLaughlin. The latter had a passion for buying up
clapped-out old vehicles, painting them up in maroon and silver, and
sending the sports teams off in them. I guess the school didn't have
much money, even then.
I was especially lousy at sport. I think I played for some B hockey
sides and then for a pretty awful First Tennis Team.I have an idea I
worked on the Beehive, or wrote for it. It was a grotty roneod and
folded A5 production, I seem to remember.
Anyway, it would be good to hear from anyone who remembers those days.
Cheers
Laurence

Hello Tony,
Today was the first time I ever even got onto the website… a bit shoddy I have to admit.
My father was also with me – Dennis Payne, who attended “The Tech” from 1947 to 1951 in which year he was
deputy head boy to Chris Dams… we both had quite a good laugh I must say.
Please include my contact details as follows:

Rich Francis (deputy head boy 1979) Craig Cowgill and myself have organised a (30 year) old boys
reunion for the M-Level years of 1977, 1978 and 1979 to be held at the Eagle Canyon Country Club in Johannesburg
on May 3rd 2008. We are already expecting over 50 guys (plus partners) and expect to have Reg Furber and other teachers
of the era to also attend. Harry Fincham has been contacted as well, and while unable to travel personally,
we hope to have a video clip to screen on the night. Anyone from those years should get in contact with any one of us
by email for the details.
Kind regards and keep up the good work.

Frank Hamilton frankhamilton49@aol.com
Hi
I was at Gifford between 72 and 74 I think!!!
My name is Frank Hamilton. I was a wee Scots lad with red hair
I have vague memories of Gifford
If you can put my email on the site to see who can remember me ( as I remember there was not a lot of red hair
Scotsmen there
)
I always remember mostly the whole class getting 6 of the best for failing a test in English. Funny how that bit sticks!
Perhaps you can put a section on the site for former pupils to reminisce.
I am now a marine Engineer and live in Scotland

Hi there,
Growing up an army brat in Llewellin Barracks, I attended Fairbridge Primary school outside Cement siding,
then in 1969 - 1971, I was a pupil at Gifford Tech.
The remainder of my education was with Allan Wilson then onto a university degree at 1RLI barracks.
Please include me in the next Gifford get together as I wish to thank Mr. Reg Furber for putting me on the straight
and narrow path of enlightenment. (6 of the best in his office.) This traumatic event ensured I remained
under the radar as far as bad behaviour went.

Alan Derek Clifton mclifton@cklegal.ca
Good day,
I am writing on behalf of my father, Alan Derek Clifton, whom I believe was a student at Gifford before it was called
Gifford. That is, if it is the same school that was called Bulawayo Tech in the 1940’s.
My father told me his headmaster’s name was Gifford. I expect that is Philip Henry Gifford.
My dad was an evacuee from England in 1940, at 12 years old, along with his nephew, Michael Elson.
He now lives in Ontario, Canada and is turning 80 next year. He is working on memoirs of his evacuation and life in
Africa.
Any information or pictures or other contacts from his time period at the school would be welcome.
Kindly contact me at this email (m.clifton@sympatico.ca) and my more regular email (mclifton@cklegal.ca).
Thank you.
Michael Clifton

please let me know. I currently building a site for Zimbabweans and Rhodesians living abroad and in Zims
in hope we can contact eachother. I would be happy to stick your site in the advertising section. Hopefully
will remind a few people.
Lastly back in 1999 you were advertising the old school boys ties. Do you still have these and or can you get them?
Anyways let me know about the site and if you need any further information with regards to my details.

Steve Holmes sholmes@greengates.edu.mx
Tony,
I am Stephen Holmes. 1973-1977 border student from Wankie.
Have just met up with a bunch of old pupils in Perth.
Great to see you all—Richard Perrett, Roddy van Rooyen, Mike Harrold and Vaughn Hattingh!
Thanks for getting the get together organized, I really enjoyed to chance to catch up with you all.
Since leaving Gifford in July 1977 I did not ever think I would get to meet up with so many of you again.
A brief synopsis of my story: First day of sixth form college in Worthing, W. Sussex I meet Steven Luff! Gifford day boy (intake year of 1974). In 1978 I reunited with Kemal Darbaz in Norwich, but have not kept in touch. In 1980 at Twickenham chance meetings with David Geddes, Brendan Beaumont and Eric Trouw whilst getting very drunk and watching Zimbabwes first rugby game in England. Kevin Schlachter was playing and we had a chat after the game.
I guess the Gifford teachers must have had a positive impact on me as I trained in teaching at Exeter University (1980-1984) and found myself at the International School of Lusaka from 1986 to 1990 as a Physical Education teacher. During these years we: that´s my wife Kim and I, traveled extensively in Southern Africa and bumped into more Gifford Old Boys. Stevie Schlachter on more than one occasion in Harare (shocked and saddened to now learn of Stevie´s fairly recent death) and Chris Botha in the Cape.
For the past 16 years we have lived and worked in Mexico City where Kim is the Head of Intermediate School and I am Deputy Head of Senior School. I can joke that I started out as a Fred Wilson and evolved into a Reginald Furber!!
We are set to stay in Mexico a while longer so if any GOBs are passing through do get in touch. It is a fantastic country to come and visit. I am particularly interested if anyone has had contact with Peter Jordan, Derek Viljoen, Gordon Hogan, Andrew Atkinson—actually anyone who knew me from Gifford in the 1970s!!
So Tony, thank you for operating this website, please post me on the list. 1A2 in 1973, up to 2A1 during 1974…left 6M1 midway through 1977.

I am an old Gifford boy. Started at the Rhodes street buildings before
going over to the showgrounds. I played football for the first year until
this was stopped. Represented the school in most of the 2nd teams. Our
class with the help of Mr. Pate started the foundations of the cricket
pavilion. We got as far a window height before leaving.
Ken Clough has added many of the names during this period. Please add mine
and Johan Botha, Ronald Hewson. I left in 1965 to work for Mike Appel only
to be laid off at 10:00 am on 11 Nov 1965. Then did my apprenticeship at
Puzey & Payne. I left Rhodesia in 1974 to work in France, Then moved into
Switzerland. In 1975 joined Caterpillar. I am now in Joburg as a Mining

the teachers. I will try and email you anything that I can get my hands on
and if you are interested I can send photos of the school and anything that might be of interest.

Jan Goosen gooses5@netspace.net.au
Hi Tony
I am John (Jack) Goosen's son.
I have up-to-date information on Jack if this is useful to you for the head boys page.
I live in Canberra
John (Jack) Morgan Goosen attended Gifford Tech between 1952-1957;
Head boy in his Final Year.
Jack played 1st Team Rugby and toured South Africa with the Rhodesian School Boys team.
On leaving school,
Jack did a fitter and turner apprenticeship with Rhodesia Chrome Mines.
He eventually rose to be Foreman of the Mechanical Workshops at Shurugwi (Selukwe) Peak Mine.
He married Jannie Tamm in 1960 and had 2 children, a boy and a girl. Jack was an active golfer, squash player
and in the earlier years played rugby with a local team. He enjoyed caravanning and recreational fishing.
Jack did his National Service in 1958 and from 1970 did increasing numbers of call-ups as the war developed.
He eventually rose to the rank of Company Sergeant Major with 10th Battalion Rhodesia Regiment,
based in Gweru (Gwelo). It was during a call-up in 1977, that Jack developed a debilitating chest condition
that made it impossible for him to perform his military duties.
On recovery to hospital, Jack was diagnosed with a virulent form of lung cancer. The disease took him from active soldier
to his deathbed in less than 6 months.
Jack Goosen died on 11 November 1977 aged just 39 - a good man always missed.
Here is his picture.
Kind regards
Jan Goosen

Thanks for the site; I have managed to get more old classmates e-mails.
Head boy Chris Heuer Passed away ±Dec 1990, I don’t have the exact date but can get it if you require it.
His parents recently moved to SA and were friends of my parents.
I have two photos of me and Alan Raaff from the young scientists’ exhibition held at the trade fair grounds,
must have been 1974 thereabouts, could you use something like that?
I spent the whole afternoon perusing the website and reading the various topics.
Thank you for a fine effort.
Admittedly I am not a traditional one for a trip down memory lane, however much of what is published took me
back to my roots.
I came across the site via Rhodesia.com and was amazed to see the number of classmates registered there.
It’s been some 32+ years and through this site and the Rhodesia.com have made contacts.
What really amazes me is the diverse scattering of the GOBs and their success stories. It’s a pity that we
were not able to help with the growth of Rhodesia as most of us who could took the gap 1978 onwards.
Even more amazing is the number of ex-black pupils post my era now residing overseas, never forgot the war cry
in all these years.
Gifford definitely had a measurable add to the forming of our value systems over and above that of merely
being ex Rhodesians/Zimbabweans. After leaving in ’81 I have never been back regrettably. I viewed the pics
of the school submitted by a GOB and must say it was moving.
People do not know how fortunate they are to be able to take a walk down memory lane in countries where
this is still possible physically. As with Rhodies worldwide, the GOBs are also scattered. I was saddened
by that apparent lack of support of GOBs in JHB and CT. I am just sorry to discover so late in the day that
organizations like this existed in SA or else I would have definitely participated.
As a bungie ditch frequenter, I remember the days of Headmaster McLaughlin and Finch and how they beat the
crap out of us, still smoke unfortunately so that didn’t seem to help. I remember in ’75, the 3rd XV were
all smokers, and played curtain raisers for the 1st team, don’t think we won any matches that year as we were
all so buggered just after running onto the field.
Messer’s Brian, Finch and Pate were the workshop teachers in my day. I guess they have all passed on by now.
They did however teach us some skills I still use even today.
After school, when you were turned 18, you were drafted. That probably made a huge difference to what
might have been. I was 3 months out of school before I was parading and drilling at Llewellyn Barracks.
One grew up too soon and lost much of one’s youth never mind the schoolmates you read about in the obituaries.
Its been nice to reminisce over the old days. It is sad this Internet technology wasn’t available in the ‘80’s.
Also it is sad to think in the next 20 years many of the old veterans will not be there anymore. Even on the
Rhodesia.com website, the majority seem to be from my vintage and were almost in our 50’s.
Even after all these years, I still have my black school blazer 3 bees and all and it still fits (just).
Once again thank you for the web site, you obviously do this out of a passion and not for financial gain.

PS there is an alumni site for Gifford at http://www.graduates.com/ss.asp?id=171789&su=1 com’on gusy take the

I been reading through old school reports, very amusing.
Started at Gifford in January 1973 in 1B1, dropped to 1B2 in second term, then failed the year, and had to repeat,
left for RSA in July 1974. Went to a school in Joburg, then off to the UK.
Huh, repeated my first year at high school, but does not mean everything, went on to do degree and masters,
so there is hope for everyone.

Uzzitt!!!
I have just come back from an 8 day trip to Byo. It did not seem to me that much else had changed at the
school since my last visit two years ago.
I did notice that part of the roof near the squash court area had blown off in a storm, right over what used to
be the art class and printing club.
Extra-mural activities were a minimum, but I saw for once, half a dozen kids playing cricket in the net area.
The playing fields don't get watered any more, and for many years now.
There is now a guard at the main gates.
I think most other entrances are closed off for cars.
The 'O' level results, etc., have a very high pass rate.
Maybe all the Dompfkoppens have left, and only the Clever Dudes remain.
Or maybe no-one can afford to fail.
Water rationing was at 450L/day/household, which wasn't a problem since we were without water half the time I was there.
Broken water pipes are a fairly common occurrence.
The water is often and for long periods of time, not treated.
It is pumped straight from the dam to the tap.
People use these special filter jugs to clean out the tap water.
They keep a set of thermo flasks for spare backup drinking water.
They also keep several other items for backup in case of the many other interruptions of supplies.
A two plate gas stove always ready in the kitchen.
A 12V car battery with 220V charger in the kitchen.
The 12V car battery is used for several things, one being for a 12V fluorescent light for when the power goes off.
Cell phones can also be charged via the 12V car kit, which is handy since many people find it difficult to get
replacement batteries.
I went up on 'Ma Bark', and had pre-arranged 100L of petrol in Byo. Most amazing stuff this petrol. I don't think it is still the 'Blend' that used to be available years ago. I think it is the 'normal' petrol the rest of RSA or Botswana uses. But I reaaally think it is the Zimbabwe Blend, full of additives. A lot of goods are almost completely imported via taxi or car with trailer. I think this chunky fuel is probably from Botswana, and the tanks it is being brought in on, must be seriously dirty. Now when I say dirty, I mean like chunky dirty. It is literally full of big black chunks anywhere between 1-10mm in size, maybe additives?? I strongly suggest to filter the fuel before putting it in your tank. (In my case, crush it first, then filter it!!!) Ma Bark doesn't have a fuel filter, but I did make a siphon/filter and took it up with me. Make sure you take something though, and that it is effective. Even a tea strainer will help. A pity I didn't take a photo of it. Also, be careful elsewhere, because some BM fuel is mixed with water and diesel too.
I would also take my own air pump for tyres. God alone knows where any body ever pumps a tire between towns.
Maybe they don't.
And for a bike, take the small metal pressurized bottles of air. Two bottles will inflate one tire easily,
they come is a set of two or four bottles.
I understand that you have to pay to inflate a tire in Byo, and not all petrol stations have air.
Eskimo Hut still has ice-cream, but melts quickly. I had -ONE- small cup of ice-cream there even though I am diabetic, he he he.
There was Coke for a change, but no Coke Light. One litre bottles were scarce. There was not enough Coke here in RSA either, BTW, and was all imported over Xmas. You get the Zim version of Coke Light now, if you didn't know. Don't tell anyone in Zims I said this, but cold drink is really quite cheap. You can drink it until it comes out of your left lug-hole. When travelling through most smaller towns, you won't be allowed to take the bottle away, you will have to drink the cold drink there.
There was no milk for quite a few days or cheese. Well, there was cheese here and there, but it looked like it had been thrown away, and then put back on the shelves again. There is only one place to go for cheese and milk - 'Sedgemoors'. Sedgemoors sold a decent piece of very fresh cheese for ZIM$4500. The '''exact''' same cheese elsewhere was going for ZIM$15100 !!! The exact same piece of cheese !!! I bought three pieces of cheese, but wasn't allowed one of them when we got home.
I have been up to Byo about 12 times since 2000, mainly for family issues, three members who have now passed on.
The Byo Crematorium unit was stuffed. I think they had put in new elements which at some point blew up, destroying
to old ones too.
So Mama went on quite a trip before she finally got nuked.
I can't recall the exact set of events, but it went something like this:
We agreed they could send her body to Gwelo/Umtali?, but they she got there, God rest her Soul, they had run out of
the diesel they used for burner there.
I think she went to Harare, got nuked, and then her ashes returned to Byo.
But by this time 2-3 weeks had passed, and we couldn't stay any longer, and had already returned back to our homes.
Beit-Bridge is a true den of iniquity. I get the squits every time I think about this place. The Beit Bridge Border Post is open 24 hours a day now too. If you are going at night, I would go through just before 03h00. It starts picking up about 04h00. Never ever ever ever bother to just before or after Xmas. The correct charges at the border are about R50 to cross the bridge, R30 carbon tax for bike, R60 for a car, and about R100-150 for other things. In fact, I don't even want to comment much further.
Toll fees from Jhb to BB is about R120 one way. From Jhb to Byo return, it will cost you, without including petrol costs, but for toll and border fees, about R600 easily !!! But the toll road and full freeway goes all the way to Messina now. It is really nice to travel day or night. There are many ultra-cities along the way too. It is a nice road to travel.
Beware!!! Zim has radar cameras now too, even at the smaller towns. They are usually manned within 5kms of a town.
They might be found as you leave Byo on the Jhb road, near Essexvale, and West Nicholson.
But I feel that if you did make a duck, they would run out of gas before they caught you,
let me know if this works for you too!!
Many police in Byo have mountain bicycles now. So when they are called for an emergency,
give 'em about an hour to peddle to your house.
Death Certificates!!! Oh my goodness me!!! The queues!!! When you get to the front, they will walk right up to you, and tell you they have just closed. Well, once again, good luck to you all.
The bank rate was about ZIM$100 for R1.
The BM bank rate is now about ZIM$500 for R1.
There was a serious noticeable difference in the thickness of bank notes once money was changed.
Only 50 ZIM$10 000 notes for every R1000 changed BM.
When my mom croaked, I changed about 10 inches of notes. Wads of notes.
The money was now quite manageable, although 1 more zeros would have been fine.
I gave most of the cash to the people I stayed with, and then R2500 to them before I left,
which reduced everyone into tears.
With all the stories one might hear, I can say that been going up there so much since 2000,
that it was really the first time that I could honestly notice some serious problems.
That is to say, in between all the serious problems one might notice.
Businesses were on absolute minimum staff, and can say that even my cousins there might last 2 years more outside,
and then I have absolutely no idea what they are going to do.
I think that many people have now left it too late to leave '''by their own means'''.
I don't think many can earn a salary quick enough to pay a transport fee with inflation as it is.
RSA is VERY quickly going the same way too, but obviously no-one will admit it. No petrol last year, no electricity, and water going off and on the whole time.
On several trips to the Matopas, I usually always go to the Worlds View, and the Maleme Dam areas. I remember the days when you could just drive on the usual route to the Maleme dam, and see rhino, giraffe, zebras, all the different buck, etc. In the last six years, without going to any specific location in the Matopas, i.e., specific spots where say rhino are kept, you just don't see much at all. There were only monkeys and baboons, and other than that, I only saw one small set of eland when just about out of the park. Nothing else. Nothing at all. When I was at the Wankie Game Reserve two years ago, I noticed just how young many of the animals were. They were many animals all around. There was the most humongous herd of buffalo, I reckon several hundred all in one group.
The other thing that severely hacked me off, was the sheer number of animals being hit by vehicles on the roads.
I think it would be true to say that you will NEVER travel the Beit Bridge Byo road without ever seeing a freshly dead animal.
And not just one, but anything from say 6 to 14 carcasses.
The truck drivers try to '''knock''' the cattle to get them off the roads.
My second last trip, the bakkie in front of me hit a cow, chopped all four legs right off, the rest of the animal hit the windscreen.
The occupants got out, and then ran in three different directions.
The poor animal was still very much alive, having landed about 8m away just off into the bush.
The donkeys are a real problem. They lie in the roads at night.
They also just don't move out of the way no matter how big the truck is.
In fact, a friend of mine came down here just a few weeks ago by bus.
The bus travelled at night, and passed a car that had hit a donkey.
The car burst into flames, and all the people were burnt alive.
The donkey quite dead, had given birth to a baby donkey.
Where do you go and get help on the 322kms stretch between Byo and BB??
How do you phone anyone on MTN or Vodakom??
How do you get police, AA, or a vet??
Cattle, donkeys, goats, sheep, baboons, guinea fowl, and warthog are all targets.
The warthog is one to watch out for, especially if the grass along the road is not very very short.
The problem is that they blend in so well, and you only see them when they step out into the road.
If the grass is a foot high, just go slowly.
If you go to the Vic Falls, nearly every single person in or around the town trying to change money with you. Most are police in plain cloths. So don't be fooled. They are very sticky there with money changing. In fact, they even have special uniformed police just for this alone. They are easily recognisable. I think you have to pay US$10 or US$20 to go inside the main falls area. Must be in US dollars I think it is. There are big full length signs all over the place telling you to change money at the bank only. The plain clothed cops are really easy to tell, simply because they ask right in front of the big sign, with the other cops just over the road waiting for you to take the bait. Remember this, if you still have your old metal Zim ID, you can use it to get in to most places if they don't see your RSA number plates, etc. But if you now have an accent, either too South African, Ozzie, or English, it might be difficult to fool even Gus.
But I have decided that I must leave Zim trips for a while now. I think I might only return again once fuel is more easily obtainable so I can travel the country, and when Beit Bridge changes some of its policies. You know, Messina means something like an entrance to a Paradise. But when you pass Messina, now Musina, you are almost sure it is not Heaven, but Hades.
But still, home is where the heart is.
Old age pensioners are no longer able to support themselves now, even on the lowest of tariffs at old age homes.
I would encourage you all to make a monthly contribution to groups like SOAP.
I do not see things getting better. If you have an RSA number plate, never leave a car unattended to in town. Byo was hot and dry. It has the legacy of always threatening to rain.
Over and out....
Ex-Gifford Pupil.

As Mr Webb was my 1st teacher at Gifford and I noticed in Mr Mennes page mention of him being in SA, I would dearly
like to contact him or his son Anthony who was in my class 1966-1969.
Anthony was my best man at my wedding in 1976 and we simply lost touch after I moved to SA in 1981.
Here's hoping?

Grant Bruce grantb@macgroup.co.za
Dear Tony
After many years having never been back to Zim, even more away from the old school,
and having never ventured down memory lane in any nostalgic websites, it was quite
weird seeing the names of so many guys I knew in a different time and world.
Anyway, I just wanted to add my details to the contact list.
I was at Gifford between 1973-79. They were amazing years in Rhodesia as it was then,
the likes of which, despite the stuffed up politics, we will never see again.
There were some real arseholes at the school at the time, and I was one of them,
but the school remains a great part of my life, and I often wonder where everyone is,
who is still alive (I saw that Stuart Newlands had died), and what they’re up to.
Thanks for keeping the flame alive.
All the best
Grant Bruce

Hi Tony,
Would be grateful if you would update my email address
John Evans
New address jaevans@chariot.net.au
We moved to Adelaide in October 2003.
In December 2002 we visited Bulawayo and I took my family to see my old school.
The visit brought back many wonderful memories. I had the opportunity to chat briefly
with Anthony Menne who was packing up his home in Russell house,
having just days before had his final assembly. I could not believe that after all
those years he was leaving. He had retired and bought a home in Hillside.
I trust he and his family are really well. Life in Zim is not easy.
The photographs attached to Dave Riggs email are just as we found the school in 2003.
Thanks for your work on this site. It is very much appreciated.
Regards and very best wishes

Dear Tony,
I was a teacher of Geography at Gifford for most of 1979.
It was the school that made the biggest impression on me and
I still have the fondest memories of being a boarding master at Newman House
and teaching Geography to those marvelously motivated boys.
As a young teacher I was sent off assembly by Harry Fincham to put a jacket on!
So it was not just pupils who were subject to discipline then.
I have lived in Australia since then but often wonder what happened to some of
the staff such as Harry, Tony Mene, Andre Van Heerden, Max Carew and Mike Clarence.
A quick scan of your site did not reveal any news of ex staff, but maybe I missed a link.

David Rigg d.rigg@tesco.net
I am an ex Giffford pupil 1963-1968. Have logged on to your web site from time to time
over the last 12 months, and as I have just returned from Zim thought that I would drop
you a line to tell you how I found it there on my visit and attach a few photos of the
school that may be of interest to you and other ex pupils.
My first time back in Zim was 1999 after leaving in 1968, we were on holiday at the
falls from the UK and had arranged to catch the overnight train to Bulawayo on the
Sunday night and spend the day there and then catch the train Monday night train
back to the falls. On the Saturday night on my way up to get ready for dinner I asked
reception for the phone directory and managed to find someone I knew, and gave him a
ring and he picked us up at the station and we have kept in touch ever since.
In fact this holiday we did Capetown and the Garden route and then flew up to the Falls
for a few days then Charlie came up to the falls Thursday morning and we travelled back
down to Byo on Friday pm. At the falls we went to the Sprayview hotel for a drink Thursday
afternoon, then again in the evening after we had been to the Cattleman's for dinner and
the price of the drinks had gone up, and then on Friday lunchtime before we headed down
to Byo, and to exchange some £ for Zim dollars on the black market
(they call it the parallel market) the drinks had gone up again, that's what I call
inflation. Official rate when we were there 45276 zim $ to £, black-market 90000.
One beer Vic Falls Hotel 135,000 4 beers Sprayview 105,000.
Charlie could not believe the prices up at the falls, he was taking the bar and meal
bills to show everyone back in Byo.
The town (Byo) is a bit worse than when we were there in 1999, some litter town centre,
a few pot holes in the roads in the suburbs, and the council apparently cannot afford to
replace the street light bulbs when they go so about 20% of street lights are out, not
too bad really.
All imported goods have 65% tax duty on them.
Plenty of petrol stations but none with any petrol when we were there.
The Caltex petrol station at Bradfield (just up from the school) had petrol if you
had coupons which have to be bought with foreign currency
(which you are not supposed to have as a Zim resident)
Best buy to me was bread @18,000 worst buy a bottle of imported whisky @1.5million.
Vegetables and fresh fruit are expensive, eating out is cheap compared to England ,
well at the 90000 rate anyway. In Byo we went out to the Monkey, a restaurant,
it has been built just down from Bradfield on the opposite side of the road.
Anyway dinner with drinks for 5 of us was 2.5 million so at black-market rates
£28, but I did notice that the veg and potato portions were small, but not the meat.
The largest denomination currency note in Zim is 20,000 so you can imagine the time
spent at the supermarket tills taking the customers money. Oh and the 20,000 is
only printed on one side.
Minimum wage there is 900,000 Zim$ a month and a factory worker is on
about 3 million a month. It is the people on pension who are the worst off for
company pensions in Zim are not inflation linked or not for the level of inflation
they are experiencing. In 2000 the exchange rate was 62 Zim$ to £.
For an example Charles mothers pension is 900 Zim $ per month. (yes it would buy a
loaf of bread every 20 months) There are organisations from the UK and elsewhere that
are trying to help these pensioners that are left.Talking about inflation, went into
Ramjies on Grey Street( next to the cinema ) that used to sell all the ' cool in gear'
back in the 60's well it is still there and I went in to buy a shirt for a present and
when I complained about the price 4 million Zim$ and said items like this were much
cheaper in the UK, Ramjie himself (son of ) said it was imported and that inflation
in Zim was 2% a day so hence the price , like 2% a day was an achievement.
Went to the motor race track on the Saturday afternoon. The Byo Motor club was
having drag racing down the main straight after the hairpin, basically street cars,
a nice old souped up Ford Anglia was showing some of this modern stuff the way home.
Reminded me of the old days and Grey Street.
Photos,CLICK HERE, you should recognise them but
to remind you,the field one is the one we all
planted, Russell House(looks like a bit of a fire in the boiler house black smoke on
the wall and the canopy is missing it was there in 1999 must have been one of those
pupils having a smoke),Newman House,Gym and main field, admin block, lab block with
new extension, class rooms opposite Russell House. Behind these classrooms is a second
swimming pool not there in our day.It was empty and when I mentioned it to Charlie
he said it was most probably because they could not afford the chemicals to run it.
(imported products) Went into the Admin block saw a, senior master, I said I was here
in the 60s and left Xmas 1968, to which he replied he was in form 2 then.
I told him about the planting of the field, the school web site and what was new build
since our day he seemed interested, and he wandered to the lab block with me and said
that the extension you can see on the photo is also labs.He also told me they have 1200
pupils now, I think it was 500 to 600 in my day.
I will sign off now as someone keeps saying am I writing War & Peace.
Hope I can attach these photos.
Finally just to say thanks for the web site I have found it both
interesting and useful.
Regards,
David Rigg.

Phil Whitehead philwzim@ecoweb.co.zw
Passing of Phil Whitehead on 29 Oct 2005
My Dearest Family and Friends It is with a heavy heart, I have to tell you that Phil passed away this morning. We were out in the Matopos and he was running in the Amalinda 21 km half marathon and really enjoying the race. Without warning after 9 kms he collapsed. I am so grateful that his fellow runners were immediately with him. He was brought to town by ambulance but he was not able to be resuscitated.
How blessed he was to die whilst doing something he loved so much.
We, his family, rest in the full knowledge that today Phil is in the presence of His Lord Jesus Christ whom he loved, honoured and served.
Last night at a dinner he told the people present that his prayer was "Lord make my life count." We believe that his prayer has been answered.
Please hold us up in your prayers.
Much love
Sandy, Wendy, Mark, Lauren and Kristin and Joan (Phil's Mum)
