Citations
Charles David COWAN was on the Staff of the School from September 1938 to December 1968.
During his 30 years at Gifford he taught woodwork, metalwork, technical drawing and building sciences.
His association with the boarding part of the Shool was a long and fruitful one. He was acting Superintendent of Johnson house for a term in 1948, Housemaster of Newman House for four terms (l954 - 1955), acting Superintendent of Russell House for a term in 1955, superintendent of Johnson House for five years until it was transferred to the Technical College at the end of 1960, and housemaster of Russell House from 1962 to 1968.
He was appointed Master-in-charge of the Russell House branch of the School 1.1.1958, in the days when the School was split among several localities.
He was Acting Deputy Headmaster for a term in 1953.
He is remembered chiefly for his gentleness, modesty and integrity.

Alfred Edmond FARRELL was a founder member of Staff, serving from January 1927 until the second term of 1946, when he was appointed Headmaster of Chaplin School, Gwelo.
He was the School's first Deputy Headmaster and he acted as Headmaster on several occasions (1930, 1935 and 1942).
He was Housemaster of Main Hostel from 1937 to the end of 1942. He then became Housemaster of Johnson House until he left on promotion.
He taught Science and Mathematics and was Head of these Departments.
He started the Cadet Detachment in 1927 and was in charge of it until he left.
Thirty years have elapsed since "Tinky" Farrell left us, but despite this lapse of time his death earlier this year brought a sharp sense of loss to the School.

Andrew HART had 21 productive years at the School. He came to us from Plumtree in January 1941 as an assistant master and retired in December 1961 after nine years as Headmaster (he was the School's third Headmaster). He lives in England.
He was acting Superintendent of Russell House for a term in 1942, became Superintendent of Heyman House in 1945, and Superintendent of Johnson House in 1946. He remained in Johnson House until early in 1951.
He was appointed Deputy Headmaster in January 1948, acted as Headmaster on several occasions and was finally appointed Headmaster in January 1953.
Mr. Hart's subject was English and he founded the School library and the Chess. He was also very active in School dramatics.
His meticulous attention to detail became a legend at the School.

Hugh John SUTHERBY was a founder member of Staff - one of the select band who started out under Mr. Gifford in January 1927. He was a teacher of Engineering Drawing and his brilliant examination results bore testimony to his efficiency.
He had ten years as a hostel superintendent, starting in Heyman House in 1937 and moving to Russell House 1939.
At the end of 1946 he left the School to become the Principal of the Salisbury Polytechnic, but nine months later returned to us as Headmaster, succeeding. Mr. Gifford, the Founder Headmaster. He retired in 1952, so was asscciated with the School for a total of more than 24 years.
He lives in England and continues to take a keen interest in the affairs of the School.

Stanley Haigh McLOUGHLIN came to us from Umtali at the beginning of l948 and was to spend twenty years at the School. He was acting Superintendent of Johnson House for a term in 1955 and the following year became Housemaster of Newman House. A year later he became Superintendent of Russell/Newman and he held this post for 11 years.
He was appointed Deputy Headmaster in 1962 and acted as Headmaster for a time in 1966.
His involvement with his subject, Mathematics. did not prevent him from coaching the First XV in his younger days and did not hinder him in his horticultural efforts - efforts which made the Newman House garden the loveliest part of the School.
He lives now in East London and grows champion dahlias.

William John SANDHAM joined the Staff on the 1st March, 1948, and, happily, is still teaching here, after 28 years.
He teaches Engineering Drawing and has been Master-in-charge of the Technical Department of the School since the beginning of 1959.
He acted as Deputy Headmaster for a time in l966.
He joined the School's Cadet Detachment in 1954 and in 1958 became its Commanding Officer - a position he retained until the Cadet movement was disbanded. This position it was that earned him the sonbriquet "Captain Jack".
He continues to coach swimming and hockey.

Graham John ANDERSON was on the Staff for almost 14 years. He joined us from Chaplin in 1945 and retired in 1959.
He acted as Superintendent of Hayman House twice and of Russell House once before being appointed superintendent of Russell House in 1948 - a post he occupied for a number of years.
He acted as Headmaster on several occasions: 1947, 1954, 1955, 1958 and again in 1960 after his retirement.
He was appointed Deputy Headmaster in 1953 and Master-in-Charge of the Rhodes Street Branch in 1958.
His subject was Science, his vocation education.
He interested himself in the renovation and maintenance of the facility which is now called after him - the Anderson Pool.
